How a Roof Insurance Claim Works, Step by Step

Filing a roof claim can feel overwhelming the first time you do it. The good news is that most claims follow the same basic steps. Here is how the process usually goes, and where a roofer can help.

Step 1: Get an inspection

Before you file, have a roofer look at the roof and document what they find. A good inspection includes clear photos of the damage and notes on the slopes, vents, flashing and gutters. If there is no storm damage, you have saved yourself a claim on your record.

Step 2: Review your policy

Look at your deductible, whether your policy pays replacement cost or actual cash value, and any time limits for reporting damage. Every policy is different, so read yours or ask your agent.

Step 3: File the claim

Call your insurance company or file online. Have the date of the storm, your photos and the inspection report ready. You will get a claim number and an adjuster will be assigned.

Step 4: Meet the adjuster

The adjuster inspects the roof and writes up the damage. It helps to have your roofer there for that visit, so both sides look at the same damage and nothing is missed. We are glad to meet the adjuster on your roof.

Step 5: Review the estimate

The insurance company sends a scope of work and an estimate. Compare it with your roofer's findings. If something was missed, such as damaged vents, flashing or gutters, your roofer can help you ask for a review with supporting photos.

Step 6: Schedule the work

Once the claim is approved, schedule the repair or replacement. Your deductible is your share of the cost. After the work is done, final paperwork is sent to the insurance company to close the claim.
