Pine Straw, Leaves and Clogged Gutters: Why North Metro Roofs Need Extra Care

Tall pines and hardwoods are a big part of what makes Holly Springs, Canton and Woodstock beautiful. They also drop a steady stream of needles, leaves and cones onto our roofs. Left alone, that debris does more harm than most homeowners expect.
What debris does to a roof
- Clogged gutters overflow and send water behind the gutter, into the fascia boards and down the walls.
- Wet piles hold moisture against shingles, which speeds up wear and invites moss and algae.
- Valleys back up. The valleys where two slopes meet carry the most water, and pine straw collects there first.
- Water reaches the foundation when downspouts are blocked, which can cause problems far from the roof.
How often to clean
In most north metro neighborhoods we suggest cleaning gutters at least twice a year: late spring after the pollen and seed drop, and late fall after the leaves are down. Homes under tall pines often need it more often.
Do gutter guards help?
Guards reduce how often gutters clog, but they do not make them maintenance free. Pine needles in particular can sit on top of some guards. The right guard depends on what trees are over your house.
Signs it is time for a closer look
- Water spilling over the gutters during a normal rain.
- Gutters pulling away from the house or sagging between hangers.
- Peeling paint or soft spots on the fascia boards.
- Plants or moss growing in the gutters.
Our inspections cover gutters, fascia and the roof edge, including the drip edge that keeps water out of the boards behind your gutters.
